4 Elements Earth Education Presents an Online Teacher Training program with Rick Berry

This course is designed for adults/parents who want to teach and share with children the OLD Ways through hands-on Earth Skills.  The Old Ways, for us, are so many things, but at the core of it are mindfulness and awareness, and closeness to nature and all things in it, including ourselves and others, because we ARE nature too!  Why are the Old Ways important?  They are more than important, they are the reason that we, as human beings exist today. In today’s society, we have separated ourselves from nature and forgotten these essential human skills that have allowed us to exist for almost 300,000 years. As our children begin to understand their role and relationship in nature, they also begin to recognize the reciprocity that good relationships require,  this creates the mind of the Caretaker.  For example, what happens to people also happens to land, we are irrevocably intertwined with the land, animals and each other; if we want good to come to us, we must do good by our relations.  Today’s youth greatly benefit by understanding these relationships, as they not only extend to nature, and others, but within ourselves.  Children quickly begin to learn and develop a deeper understanding of their own strengths and unique characteristics, which gives them a foundation to pursue avenues to bring them to light in today’s world.

What are Earth Skills?  Earth Skills are the traditional skills of tracking, shelter building, water sourcing, fire making and food gathering that all humans were adept at or, at a minimum, had a meaningful understanding and relationship with; survival required this of us.

What you will learn:

This course will go through the nuts and bolts of Earth Living skills and philosophy of the Caretaker. Utilizing these main understandings, we will explore how to activate and inspire youth to be outdoors and how to gain confidence as teachers to guide children safely towards trusting the Earth through many activities, skills, games, and stories.

About the Teacher:

For over 30 years, Rick Berry has been teaching youth and families the ancient skills of Tracking, Awareness, and Ecological Knowledge through the “Coyote Teaching” method. Inspired as a teen himself, Rick attended the Tracker School in New Jersey in 1986.  It was there and through several mentor relationships in his youth that Rick’s passion and vision became clear to him; ensuring these ways: the Old Ways, Earth Skills and Caretaking, were shared with youth and continued on, even as society left them further behind.
